Serving the World

At least once a month the Wesley Foundation engages in service and justice opportunties on campus or in larger Maryland/ DC community. (Check out our calendar page or scroll to the bottom of this page for updated events).

Want to make a difference in the world?  We do!

For the Wesley Foundation serving the world is a way that people have a chance to live out their faith and help the world everyday of the week. The United Methodist Church has a long history of outreach to the last and least in our society through volunteering and long term social change initiatives. UMs spearheaded women’s right to vote, child labor laws, freedom rides, prison ministries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens.

In line with this great history the Wesley Foundation seeks to find ways to serve the world all the time. This semester we you will join us as we participate in Habitat, head to a soup kitchen, volunteer at nursing home and go on a weekend service retreat.

Past activities and projects include attending Help The Homeless Walkathon, organizing a team for Relay for Life, caroling at nursing homes during the Holiday season, and developing our own mission trip (previous trips have gone anywhere from South Africa to New Orleans).

More opportunities and more information to come! We are constantly looking for and adding more opportunities to serve and are updated on our calendar page.

For more information on our service activities, please e-mail Rev. Kim Capps

Upcoming Opportunties to be in service to the world:

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Fundraiser

Tuesday February 21 6:30-8:00 at University UMC

United Methodist Campus Ministry is hosting its annual pancake dinner at UUMC--this year we will be raising funds to help fight cancer through the Relay for Life! There is no charge for the pancakes (with yummy toppings!). But we will be taking donations for the Relay for Life. Also we'll have a live band performance by Tad's Dixieland Combo.

Do you love pancakes? Do you know someone who has fought cancer?

Then come out and support this wonderful event!

Safe Haven Homeless Shelter

Thursday March 1, 2012 (overnight)

The Safe Haven Shelter is a rotating Men's shelter that will be coming to University UMC Feb 26- March  4.  The Wesley Foundation has volunteered to prepare, and serve a meal Thursday March 1, 2012; and to stay over night.   You are welcome to come for all or part of the evening, just to serve food, or just to hang out during the over night.

Relay for Life

April 21 the UMD participates in Rely for Life, and the Wesley Foundation has traditionally had a team!

This year's Relay For Life will begin Saturday, April 21st at 7am! At this all-night fundraising event on campus, each team has at least one person walking around the track all night, because cancer never sleeps. It's $10 to register and get a tshirt, and then we ask that you ask for donations from friends and family to help raise money to fund cancer research. Mark your calendars and register for the United Methodist Campus Ministry team at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/umdmethodists.
